AttorneyMichele L. Braukmann
Our philosophy is simple - to assure client satisfaction by providing the highest level of legal representation and service.
Michele was born in Sioux Ste. Marie, Michigan, a small town in the Upper Peninsula of the State. She spent her time as a child living in many different States, eventually settling in the State of Montana for high school. After high school, Michele attended the University of Montana in Missoula, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, High Honors. Immediately after undergraduate school, Michele enrolled in the Law School of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. After spending several years in the South Bend and Chicago area, she graduated from Notre Dame's Law School, earning a Juris Doctorate Degree, Magna Cum Laude.
Michele clerked for Moulton Bellingham during the summer between her second and third year of law school, and she was offered an Associate Attorney position to begin after she completed her law degree. She has practiced at Moulton Bellingham since her return to Montana, and she is now a Shareholder and Board Member of the firm.
In addition to various specialty insurance groups that Michele works with, she actively represents insurers such as the Farmers Insurance Group, Maryland Casualty, Zurich, CNA, Truck Insurance Exchange, 21st Century, and various captive insurance contractor, trucking, medical, and retailer groups. Michele also defends a substantial number of cases for municipalities in the State of Montana, both directly and through the Montana Municipal Interlocal Authority. These cases include defense of various civil rights claims, excessive force and related claims against Police Departments, general negligence claims involving municipal departments, and employment-related matters for Cities in Montana. In addition to her insurance and municipal liability defense work, Michele also focuses her practice on assisting small business clients in managing and reducing their employment-related risks, including advising them regarding issues involving employee management, discipline, discharge, and discrimination, as well as actively defending EPLI claims when they arise for the Firm's employer clients.
While her focus is primarily insurance, business, municipal, and employment defense litigation, Michele occasionally also handles Plaintiff's employment litigation or general tort claims. Over the past several years, Michele has taken several Plaintiff's discrimination and tort claims to successful verdict and/or settlement. She successfully represented a post-war Veteran on a PTSD discrimination claim against his employer from 2011-2012, which resulted in a substantial verdict in his favor, as well as the recovery of his fees and costs in pursuing the discrimination claim. Michele has also successfully handled various Plaintiff's tort claims, some involving sexual assault and abuse issues against children or disabled individuals.
Michele is also active in working with the Montana Legislature on captive insurance issues in the State of Montana. The Montana Legislature passed Series LLC legislation in the past few years, which Michele assisted in drafting and presenting to the Montana House and Senate. Montana's Series LLC statutes have now created cutting-edge formation models for captive insurers and business owners.
In addition to practicing law, Michele is a former Board of Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Yellowstone County, which services youths in four different Clubs in Billings and the surrounding communities. As an alum of the Boys and Girls Club, Michele is passionate about their mission to provide opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential. Michele is also a member of the Yellowstone County Bar Association and the State Bar of Montana. She is admitted to practice in the State of Montana District Courts, the federal District Courts in the State, and the Ninth Circuit.
Michele has four young children, who keep her busy outside of the firm -- sons Reese and Levi and daughters Jamison and Isabel. Her children are active in the Billings Catholic Schools system, the older ones of whom attend St. Francis Primary, Intermediate, and Upper Schools.
In her spare time, Michele and her family spend as much time as they can in the beautiful outdoors of the Big Sky State.
